Late Argentine Ambassador fondly remembered in Mayo

THE Argentine Ambassador to Ireland, Laura Bernal, who has died, is being fondly remembered in Mayo today.

Links between Foxford and Argentina have been strong for many years through the Admiral William Brown Society – Foxford native Admiral Brown established the Argentine Navy.

Today, the society, on social media, expressed profound sadness and deep regret at the sudden passing of 'our dear friend and loyal supporter, the late Ambassador Laura Bernal, Argentine Ambassador to Ireland'.

“Ambassador Bernal was a great friend to us all here in Foxford and was a regular visitor to the town. We extend our condolences to her family, to Diego Sadofschi, Deputy Head of Mission, the staff at the Argentine Embassy, and the Argentine community, both in Ireland and Argentina. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

Last November more than 200 Argentinian military personnel travelled to Foxford when the tall ship, Libertad, visited Ireland.

Speaking about the occasion at the time, Ambassador Bernal said it was a hugely emotional day for her country.

William Brown, she said, was considered a hero by the people of Argentina and the visit by its Naval personnel was very significant.
