Bonham market returning to Castlebar

AFTER the success recently in Castlebar of community and festival days, the traders of Rush Street have decided to host their own special day. In association with Mayo Heritage Week, they will be bringing back for one day only the traditional bonham and farmers’ market that took place for years on Rush Street.

Taking place on Saturday, August 23, they will also host a heritage day featuring, among others, a thatcher, woodturner, tinsmith, forge, and  old games such as pitch and toss, skittles, etcetera. There will be a busking competition and food vendors - the centre piece being a pig on the spit. On display also will be traditional artefacts, old cars, tractors and farm machinery.

The calf market was centered around Rush/Charles Streets. The bonham market was intermingled with it.

The organisers want to hear from people with photos from that time or memories of the market. If you were part of the market and would like to take part in a CRC broadcast, contact (094) 9024845 or email chamber@castlebar.ie. People wishing to take part in the day itself should contact the above also but space is very limited.
