Westport is irelands tidiest large town
WESTPORT has been named as Ireland's tidiest large town, writes Nigel Naughton. This is the seventh time the town has won the award, and the local Tidy Towns committee are delighted to have the award back in Westport having missed out last year.
Westport picked up the award at today’s national Tidy Towns awards having score highly in categories like community involvement and planning, built environment and streetscape, and landscaping and open spaces. The town increased its overall points by four and also scooped the regional award for the west along with the gold county award.
Other Mayo award winners at the presentations in Dublin included Castlebar, Murrisk and Belmullet.
On hand to present the prizes were Alan Kelly, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, as well as Martin Kelleher, managing director of SuperValu, the competition’s main sponsor for the 23rd year.
