Doherty menswear is closed but family hope to reopen store shortly
THE local business community and public alike were taken by surprise last week when a sign appeared on the Leo Doherty Menswear store in Castlebar advising ‘Shop Closed’. The closure is only temporary, however, according to Leo (Teddy) Doherty, the Dubliner who opened the premises in 1986.
“We hope to be opening again as soon as possible. The situation is a little bit complicated. A few details have to be worked out,” Mr. Doherty said when responding to a telephone call from The Connaught Telegraph.
Mr. Doherty was working in his shop at Ballina at the time. This premises, which is situated in Pearse Street, remains open for business.
Doherty Menswear, Castlebar and Ballina, is a family run concern. Leo Doherty’s sons, Peter and Leo, are also involved in the business. The Dohertys have built up a fine reputation over the years as retailers of quality products, with customers coming from all over Connaught to purchase their clothing.
Friday last was the 28th anniversary of the opening of Doherty Menswear, Castlebar. Staff, customers and the general public are keeping their fingers crossed that lady luck will shine on the Dohertys in these hard economic times in their bid to keep the family enterprise in the county town running.
