Pedestrian killed after being hit by car in claremorris
An elderly male pedestrian was killed this morning after being hit by a car on the outskirts of Claremorris.
The victim was walking near the McWilliam Park Hotel around 7.30 a.m. when he was knocked down.
He died at the scene despite medical assistance.
The remains have been brought to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where a post mortem examination will be carried out later.
Gardaí aren’t naming the accident victim until a positive identification has been made and relatives have been notified.
As a result of the accident, the N17 road is closed from the exit slip road at the McWilliam Park Hotel to the old Ballindine Road.
Traffic is being diverted and gardaí are asking that anyone who can avoid the area to do so.
