Open verdict on writers death in lecanvey
AN internationally acclaimed young novelist was found dead in Lecanvey, Westport, last April after renting an apartment there and immersing herself in the task of writing a book, an inquest in Castlebar was told today.
Marsha Mehran (36), author of such books as Pomegranate Soup and Rosewater and Soda Bread, signed a lease on the property in January, Coroner Mr. John O’Dwyer heard.
The divorced writer, who was Iranian born, told local estate agent Teresa Walsh she wanted the house in that location in order to write a book. It is understood the book involved was to be titled The Margaret Thatcher School of Beauty, which Ms. Mehran set in Buenos Aires during the Falklands War.
Marsha Mehran’s body was discovered by Mrs. Teresa Walsh on April 30. She was lying on her bedroom floor.
Gardaí who investigated the death found no evidence of foul play.
Consultant pathologist Dr. Tamas Nemeth, who carried out a post mortem examination at Mayo General Hospital, said he concluded the cause of death was unknown. Dr. Nemeth said Ms. Mehran had a recent history of vomiting blood and had a history of gastrointestinal symptoms.
The coroner said he felt the appropriate verdict was an open verdict.
