New riverside walk link is raising hackles
RESIDENTS of Springfield in Castlebar will resist moves to narrow the street to accommodate a walking and cycling lane, a meeting of the local municipal district heard.
Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he had received representations from householders opposed to the proposal on the grounds that the area is a traffic blackspot.
He explained: “They have told me in no uncertain terms that the proposal to narrow the street will compound the existing difficulties.”
Mayo County Council unveiled a plan a number of weeks ago to enhance the former Bolgers laneway by creating a new link for the existing riverside walk between Main Street and the Town Park via Barrack Bridge and Springfield.
As part of the scheme, footpaths will be widened and car parking spaces removed at Charles Street.
