Galway win the oscar
Despite being ahead and in control for the whole first half, Mayo were eventually gunned down and beaten 3-1 by Galway in their must-win Oscar Traynor Trophy group game in Eamon Deacy Park.
Mayo travelled to the City of the Tribes knowing that they need to win by two clear goals in order to qualify, and they looked good value for that up until the 60th minute.
They led 1-0 through a Pat Fitzgerald volley, while Jason Hunt also hit the post as Mayo played excellent football and dominated proceedings.
However, the visitors paid the ultimate price for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal as Galway scored three times in the second half, including a suspicious penalty which got them back in the game, to ensure themselves of qualification.
Clare topped the group, with Galway second ahead of Mayo in third and Roscommon in fourth. Mayo drew 1-1 with Roscommon in their first game but lost 3-2 at home to Clare in the second.
The Mayo team on duty against Galway was: S. Cafferkey, S. Tagg, P. Bourke, J. Lawless, C. Cameron, S. Ryan, D. Cameron, J. Hunt, P. Fitzgerald, P. Keegan, C. Rowland. The subs used were: D. Ruddy, B. McHale.
