Sweet charity in final rehearsals
AWARD-WINNING Claremorris Musical Society is in the final stages of rehearsals for its ninth annual production, Sweet Charity, to be staged in the newly renovated Claremorris Town Hall from Friday to Sunday, January 23 to 25.
It has been a fantastic 12 months for the society with two AIMS nominations, an AIMS award, a day with President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin and a Mayo People of the Year Award for dedication to arts in the community, to name just a few accolades.
Sweet Charity is a musical comedy set in New York in the 1960s. This tender, poignant and consistently funny show looks at the adventures - or rather misadventures - in the ways of love encountered by the sweet but gullible Charity Hope Valentine (Vivienne Lee), a true romantic at heart. Her fellow dancers, Nickie, Helene, Carmen and Betsy (Karen Ronane, Mary Henry, Kate Hughes and Angela Prenty), and Boss Herman (Liam Newman) try to advise her and promise ‘There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This’.
Following a memorable evening with movie star Vittorio Vidal (Michael Goulding), Charity finally finds love with the quirky Oscar Lindquist (Richie Heneghan) and it appears that all her dreams have come true…or have they? The show is peppered with lively dance routines and familiar show-stopping numbers including ‘Big Spender’, ‘There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This’, ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ and the rousing ‘Rhythm of Life’ featuring Daddy Brubeck (Paul O’Brien).
The cast, crew and chorus have worked exceptionally hard since last September under the production team of Hazel McGlynn (director), June Allison-Keane (producer) and Deirdre Lee (musical director) to make this show truly one to remember.
CMS would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors and advertisers for their continued support.
The show runs nightly from January 23 to 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets (€15/€10) for this show are now available from the Curam centre or the Dalton Inn, Claremorris, or contact June on (087) 6332169.
