Models join tds for launch of mayo day in ballina

A host of Mayo’s premier models, led by Michelle Cunningham, launched the countdown to the forthcoming global Mayo Day with a fashion shoot in Ballina on January 18 last.

Michelle was joined by Ballina TDs Michelle Mulherin and Dara Calleary who joined in the photo shoot in the north Mayo capital.

When asked why she got involved in the event, Ms. Cunningham said: “Mayo Manchester, who are promoting it through their twitter account @mayogathering, asked us to do something to help promote Mayo Day in Ballina. We thought they meant Ballina in Australia, but it was great to do the first one in our hometown. I’m sure there would be plenty of volunteers if they needed us down under!”

Deputy Calleary, the Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Enterprise, Jobs & Innovation, commented: “Mayo Day will become a national and an international focal point for all things Mayo. It will be a day to celebrate all that is good about our great county. There are two kinds of people in the world; those from Mayo and those who wish they were from Mayo!”

Said Deputy Mulherin: “I am delighted with the plans to celebrate all things Mayo by way of a special international day on the 2nd of May.  It’s an idea whose time has come. We can boast such high profile Mayo connections worldwide, so it’s time to come together and openly celebrate that.”

Mayo Day 2015 is a global celebration organised by Mayo.ie which takes place on Saturday, May 2, for the very first time and will be staged every year on the first Saturday in May. Its aim is to reconnect the estimated 9.3 million Mayo Diaspora around the globe in getting them to celebrate their beloved west of Ireland county in their own corner of the globe.

Mayo Day organiser Martina Hughes from Mayo.ie added: “Mayo Day has really caught the imagination of the Mayo Diaspora around the globe. I know that Mayo Manchester in the UK have already planned their gala concert. They launched the countdown in front of 75,000 Manchester United and Liverpool football fans at Old Trafford with Cillian O’Connor, the award-winning Mayo GAA player and newly appointed assistant captain of the Mayo team.

“The countdown to this global party has now started and we look forward to hearing from as many groups and organisations with a connection to Mayo to help us turn the world green and red.”
