Winter concert presented by st muredachs cathedral choir
The St. Muredach’s Cathedral Choir, Ballina, and its renowned soloists and instrumentalists present a magical winter concert tonight (Friday, January 30) at 8 p.m. in the Twin Trees Hotel, Ballina.
After some very successful concerts in the last few years, the choir - directed by Regina Deacy with accompanist David Caulfield - are presenting an exciting collection of music this evening, with proceeds from the event going to the Newman Institute, Ballina.
The programme of music is varied and exciting, ranging from Bach to Billy Joel, from Italian opera to our own beautiful Irish melodies - and, of course, the choir’s favourite cathedral classics!
The choir has been an institution in St. Muredach’s Cathedral since the mid-19th century. It has a membership of 40 choristers and is a successful blend of experienced and young voices. The choir sings at 11 a.m. Mass every Sunday in St. Muredach’s Cathedral as well as at the usual liturgical highpoints in the seasons of the church year.
In 2010, the choir travelled to London where they provided music for the 6 p.m. Mass on the Feast of Christ the King in Westminster Cathedral. They also led the singing at one of the Masses of the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin in 2012, which was celebrated by Cardinal Brady.
In July 2014, the choir received the prestigious honour of singing in the Vatican. After a rigorous application and auditioning process lasting many months, the special invitation to sing in St. Peter’s Basilica was extended to the choir by the musical director of Capella Giulia, the choir of St. Peter’s.
Tickets for tonight's concert cost €12.50 and are available from the Newman Institute (telephone 096-72066), the Gift Centre on Tone Street (telephone 096-21048), or from Pat (telephone 087-2590885). Doors open at 7.30 p.m.
