Calls for reduced speed limit at bohola following tragic accident
The tragic death of a much loved nurse in a road accident in Bohola last week has led to calls on the National Roads Authority (NRA) to immediately impose a reduced speed limit on the stretch of N5 which skirts the village.
Members of the local community have long been demanding traffic calming measures as well as a right-hand turning lane for the local primary school and Barley Hill housing estate.
Local residents and the wider community were aghast last week when Mary Mulhern (55), a single woman who cared for her elderly mother, Betty, in Bohola, died after being struck by a passing car.
Mary, a nurse at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, had just left a wake for a neighbour, Philomena Aitken, when she was fatally injured.
The tragedy has sparked renewed calls on the NRA to reduce the speed limit through the village to 60 kmph.
Michael Kilcoyne and Therése Ruane, both members of Mayo County Council, have repeatedly highlighted in recent years the need for speed restrictions in the village particularly in the light of the proximity of the school, church and community centre.
