Call for demolition of old castlebar library
The demolition of the old Castlebar library building at Mountain View has been suggested by Councillor Frank Durcan.
The building is an eyesore and should be razed to provide carparking for local business people in an area where there is a dearth of parking, Councillor Durcan said at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
Councillor Blackie Gavin agreed. “It’s an old building. It should be knocked to the ground. It (the site) would be an ideal location for parking.”
Councillors Durcan and Gavin made their remarks about the library during a discussion about moves to develop an adjacent building, the old Post Office, for use as a community youth resource and support refuge for young people. The re-use of the vacant post office is planned in a joint project involving Mayo Foróige and Mayo County Council.
