Worlds first mayo day pie
To celebrate the inaugural Mayo Day on May 2, the Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business Group have commissioned local Irish chef and artisan pie maker Wendy Orr of Life of Pies to create the world’s first Mayo Day Pie.
The pie is to be launched at the UK's official Mayo Day gala concert at St. Mary's Parish Centre in Levenshulme, which is being headlined by Ballina band Flatout plus Kevin Prendergast and the award-winning Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band and the Keegan Academy of Irish Dancers.
Lawrence Hennigan from Mayo Manchester commented: “We wanted to create something special to mark this historic global celebration. I got the idea when I saw Wendy create a shamrock steak and Guinness pie for St. Patrick’s Day.
“The Mayo Day Pie has caused quite a stir already.”
The Levenshulme Pub Company have also got their top mixologist creating a special Mayo Day cocktail to go with it and it is hoped to have the whole of the village flying the green and red Mayo flags.”
The artisan pie maker has created three versions of the special pie. One features the distinct green and red chequered Mayo GAA flag, the other features the Mayo Day initials in the county colours, and the third one has TD initials in green and red. The TD pie was aimed at Mayo’s members of Dáil Éireann.
The pies have a filling of smoked gammon, spring cabbage, potato and onion along with the company’s signature cream cheese sauce.
The distinctive pies have already been shipped to Ballina TD Michelle Mulherin to check if they meet with her approval and they are about to be taken over to Perth in Australia to help with their Mayo Day celebrations down under.
