Victim of road tragedy was wellknown

A 34-year-old man from Co. Mayo who died following a road accident near Ballyvary, Castlebar, last evening (Saturday) was a member of a well known local family.

Joe Mullaney (34), Ardboley, Balla, was driving alone when his van left the road at Knockanure, Ballyvary, close to the turnoff on the N5 for Turlough.

The vehicle went out of control and collided with a gate and a concrete post and rail fence before ending up badly damaged in a field.

Mr. Mullaney, who had been driving in an easterly direction along the N5, was rushed to the nearby Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, where he died later.

The victim was a member of a prominent family involved in boxing and cattle breeding.
