Up and over...a truck traverses the ramp at the top of Main Street, Castlebar

Works start on bumpy ramps

Talk about the Rocky Road to the hospital...or even the church or graveyard.

For months now there have been complaints that ambulances, hearses and other vehicles are hitting their rear bumpers off the ramps on Main Street, Castlebar, opposite AIB and Costcutters.

Some time ago, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne – who should know about hearses as he drives one occasionally – complained about the ‘bumps’ on Main Street when he spoke at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District. He called on engineers to address the problem.

So what’s exactly wrong with the ramps? According to Councillor Kilcoyne, the ground just before the ramps has subsided a little and needs to be raised.

It doesn’t augur well for a recently completed project costing in excess of €1 million in the centre of town if there are already problems with the design,” the councillor mused.

The council promised that remedial works on the ramps would be carried out. Those works got underway in recent days and are nearing completion.
