Knock airport to benefit from aer lingus sale
MANAGAMENT at Ireland West Airport Knock has welcomed the government’s decision to support the IAG proposal to acquire Aer Lingus.
The Aer Lingus Gatwick service to and from Knock airport serves over 70,000 passengers annually and offers connectivity to over 220 worldwide destinations from London Gatwick.
Joe Gilmore, managing director at the facility, said should the transaction be completed, the Mayo airport can look forward to actively working with IAG in growing the important Gatwick service and exploring new growth opportunities.
Local Fine Gael Deputy John O'Mahony confirmed the proposed sale 'makes specific reference to IAG’s plans to sustain and grow Aer Lingus’ business at Knock airport.'
He elaborated: 'It plans to do this by maintaining the service to London Gatwick and actively working with Knock airport to explore the new growth opportunities that will be available as part of IAG.
“I am very reassured by this commitment to Knock airport. Knock is crucial for connectivity for people in Mayo, Galway and surrounding counties. It is the most westerly airport in Ireland and so it is also crucial to Irish tourism overall, as a key gateway to the very successful Wild Atlantic Way.
'It is the only Western seaboard airport to have direct access from key markets in Germany, Holland and Italy, thus positioning it as a convenient and ideal location for overseas visitors to access the Wild Atlantic Way.
“This commitment to Knock airport, as part of the new deal on Aer Lingus, is most welcome for people and businesses in the West of Ireland.”
