Omahony selected to run in galway west
OUTGOING Mayo Fine Gael Deputy John O’Mahony has tonight been selected as one of his party’s four candidates to contest the next general election in the Galway West constituency.
The former Mayo, Leitrim and Galway senior football manager wil be joined on the ticket by outgoing TDs Sean Kyne and Brian Walsh and Senator Hildegarde Naughton.
Deputy O’Mahony announced his decision a number of weeks ago to switch to the expanded Galway West after a large portion of south Mayo was transferred into it.
Some 10,000 votes from electoral areas around Ballinrobe has been added to the Galway West constituency, which remains a five-seater.
The four candidates were the only party members to seek nomination at the convention in Galway
Fine Gael won two seats in Galway West for the first time in almost 30 years at the last election.
