Hit and run driver who injured garda still at large

GARDAÍ in Co. Mayo have renewed an appeal for a driver involved in a hit and run incident on Monday evening, last in which a garda sergeant was injured, to come forward.

Despite checks on a number of addresses nationwide where gardaí believe the male suspect might be located, no trace has been found of him.

However, a car which is believed to have been used in the hit and run at Bury Street, Ballina, around 6 p.m. on Monday has been seized by gardaí.

Ballina-based Sergeant Declan Casey was brought by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital after sustaining a leg injury but was released after treatment.

Sergeant Casey had been on traffic duty with another uniformed colleague at the time of the incident.

Local Garda Supt. Joe Doherty repeated his call last evening for the individual who is wanted to come forward.

The officer also thanked members of the public who assisted the injured officer prior to the arrival of the emergency services.
