Young man killed in mayo quarry tragedy

A MAN has died following an accident in a quarry near Tooreen, Co. Mayo.

The victim, who was in his 20s, died around 10 a.m. this morning while operating a stone crusher.

Ambulance personnel and a local doctor were quickly on the scene when the alarm was raised. The victim was removed from the crusher but there was nothing that could be done to save him.

The quarry where the young man was working is one of a number operated by well known local businessman Frank Harrington Limited.

Gardaí are presently at the scene. The quarry has been closed and Health and Safety personnel are on their way to conduct an investigation.

The remains have been removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post mortem examination.
