Mayo farmer wins own burial plot appeal
A MAYO farmer has secured a significant victory by winning the right to build a private burial ground for himself on a site in Mullenmadogue, Swinford.
Martin Neary was successful in his appeal against Mayo County Council’s ruling to refuse him planning permission for the project on environmental grounds.
In its adjudication of Mr. Neary’s appeal, An Bord Pleanála stated the proposal can proceed because it will not be prejudicial to public health due to the use of a sealed concrete vault in which to entomb the remains.
The planning appeal board is also satisfied its ruling will not set a precedent for further similar developments and will not detract from the amenity of the area.
'The proposal is considered to be consistent with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area,' the board added.
