Mayo community support ugandan orphanage

A UGANDAN school and orphanage is reaping the rewards of the generosity of a Mayo community.

Kathy Lyons (Balla) and Vera Kilgallon (Mayo Abbey) would like to thank the people of Balla, Mayo Abbey and the surrounding areas for all their help with raising money for Broadway school/orphanage in Uganda.

Lucy Gill, Breaffy, introduced Balla to the charity and since then there have been a number of fundraisers, raising over €7,000.

They have managed to supply a water well costing €5,000 from a very successful head shave. Vera Kilgallon bravely decided to shave her hair and now the children from the school/orphanage have fresh water to drink where before they were drinking out of a dirty stream.

They also managed to fund new uniforms for the children and Balla National School raised enough money for a cow, which will supply the children with milk.

Another entertaining night was the music extravaganza organised by Balla No Name club, with guests entertained by Mayo Concert Orchestra and pupils from Craggagh National School. Some €1,200 was raised, which is going towards a perimeter fence to keep the children safe from wild animals and child traffickers.

There is €5,500 needed for the fence and the girls hope to raise the rest of the money needed soon with upcoming events.

They are looking for people to run the Balla 10k on July 25 and have sponsorship cards for anyone that needs them. Also anyone that would like to donate, please contact Kathy on (087) 1940177 or Vera on (087) 9606344.
