Mayo gaas venue plea is upheld
FOLLOWING their victory over Kilkenny in the All-Ireland junior football championship semi-final in O’Connor Park, Tullamore, on Saturday last, the Mayo junior team will now meet Kerry in the All-Ireland final.
With the decider of the junior championship decider down for decision next Saturday week, August 8, the Mayo County Board asked the GAA authorities that it be played in Croke Park ahead of the two senior All-Ireland quarterfinals, seeing that the Mayo senior side is playing in the second of these two games.
This plea by the Mayo County Board has been upheld by the GAA authorities as they have fixed the junior final for that date and venue.
Board chairman Mike Connelly told The Connaught Telegraph that it would not have been possible to play the junior and senior games at different venues on Saturday week and they had asked Croke Park to look at bringing the junior final against Kerry to Croke Park and having a triple header.
Yesterday (Monday) Connaught Council GAA secretary John Prenty confirmed to The Connaught Telegraph that the GAA authorities had decided to play the All-Ireland junior final in Croke Park on Saturday week.
He said: 'The All-Ireland junior final has now been fixed for Croke Park on Saturday week and will be played at 2 p.m. The first of the All-Ireland senior quarterfinals involving Monaghan will start at 4 p.m., with Mayo’s senior quarterfinal encounter getting underway at 6 p.m.'
