Mayo water in health scare
UP to 30,000 consumers attached to the Lough Mask Water Supply, along with with the 1,200 householders connected up to the Treenagleragh public water supply in Kiltimagh, are being exposed to THMs which can potentially cause the growth of cancer cells.
That's according to Yvonne Doris, an inspector with the Environmental Protection Agency.
She revealed that in the latest revision of the EPA’s National Remedial Action List of public water supplies, there are three Mayo supplies that require attention and the agency is insisting that Irish Water acts immediately to rectify its concerns.
They include Lough Mask, Kiltimagh and Inishturk public water supplies.
She explained that the level of THMs detected in the Lough Mask and Kiltimagh public water supplies exceeded the European acceptable level and while there is no definitive proof that THMs cause cancer they are believed to be carcinogens.
There is no ban on drinking water on any of the three supplies.
