Accident victim was former mayo allireland mfc winning star
THE teenager who lost his live in a road accident near Ballinrobe last night has been named as talented Kilmaine footballer Darragh Doherty.
Nineteen-year-old Darragh Doherty from Ballyhenry, Shrule, died when the car he was driving struck a wall at Carrowmore, on the N84 Ballinrobe to Kilmaine road.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Mayo General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Darragh was the youngest of five sons of Tom and Margaret Doherty and was a member of Kilmaine GAA club.
He was a member of the Mayo minor football team that won the All-Ireland in 2013.
A second teenager, who was a passenger in the car, was taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital and has today been transferred to the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
The N84 Ballinrobe to Kilmaine road reopened to traffic earlier this afternoon, and Claremorris Gardai are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to contact them at 094 – 93 72080.
Local councillor Patsy O’Brien said the entire South Mayo region has been stunned saddened by the tragedy.
