Turf thieves pounce in mayo

TURF thieves are at large in Mayo.

Gardai in Castlebar are investigating the theft of up to 100 bags of turf from a bog at Burren on the outskirts of the town. 

The turf was taken between 7.30 p.m. on Thursday and 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

A garda spokesman said this kind of theft becomes more widespread as winter approaches.

Last month a number of bogs in county Galway were targeted and turf was stolen.

The IFA has advised bog owners to extend community watch alerts to local bogs.
