Coda hits feature in rugby world cup film

THE rich harmonies of Coda singing can now be heard by rugby fans around the globe on the soundtrack of a new film about rugby in the Pacific Islands.

The rousing documentary film Pacific Warriors was launched to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. Rugby is more than a sport to the people of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga and Pacific Warriors explores the story of the greatest underdogs at the Rugby World Cup.

The two Coda tracks chosen are both rollicking sea shanties. One is the YouTube sensation 'Leave Her Johnny', which has now racked up over 300,000 views. The other is 'Randy Dandy', described as a capstan shanty of uncertain origin.

Although none of the Pacific Island nations have ever won a rugby World Cup title, the film shows their passion and ability to always put up a great fight against the top tier nations. One wonderful quote from the film refers to their remarkable physique, saying that the islanders playing in the World Cup is David versus Goliath - but in this case David is built like Goliath.

Pacific Warriors features rugby greats Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward, Bakkies Botha, Matt Giteau, David Haye and Jason Robinson.

Pacific Warriors is directed by Adam Perrin, and produced by James Marquand whose father Richard Marquand had a stellar career, directing both Jagged Edge and Return of the Jedi.

A significant percentage of profits will be donated to Pacific rugby development. The film is available on iTunes.

Coda played to a sell-out audience at Westport Town Hall during the summer and will return to the Town Hall Theatre on Friday, December 4. They also play the Nuns Island Theatre, Galway, on Friday, December 11.
