Red card for on-street parking charges in Westport
ELECTED members of the West Mayo Municipal District have shot down a proposal to introduce on-street parking charges in Westport in line with other major towns in the county.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Brendan Mulroy said it is great news for the tourist town where retailers were strongly opposed to the proposal.
'This is brilliant news. There will be no on-street parking charges anywhere in the West Mayo Municipal District. Thanks to my elected colleagues for their support.'
The move, however, may lead to elected members in the three other municipal district of Castlebar, Ballina and Claremorris to seek the removal of on-street parking charges to bring them into line with West Mayo.
If successful, it would have serious financial repercussions for the council.
