Steps initiated to protect future of Ireland's holy mountain
A MOVE is being made to protect Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, from excess usage by charity and sporting events.
Concerns in regard to the deterioration of the mountain's pilgrim path led to the West Mayo Municipal District holding a public meeting in Westport last night (Monday), although members of the media were excluded from attending.
There was a big attendance of stakeholders, including representatives of the 45 landowners.
Now a move is being initiated to set up a management committee to restrict the number of events on the Reek on an annual basis.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State Michael Ring as well as local councillors. It was chaired by Martin Keating, town manager, Westport.
Minister Ring told The Connaught Telegraph it is vital for the future of Croagh Patrick that efforts are taken to protect it.
Earlier this year the annual pilgrimage was cancelled after the pilgrim path was deemed to be dangerous due to heavy rains.
