Opening of €1.4 million centre in Castlebar a boost for CF patients
A NEW €1.4 million day care centre which will increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of the many cystic fibrosis patients in Mayo was officially opened this evening (Friday) by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.
The unit is located at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.
Deputy Kenny described it as a milestone for improving health care services in the west.
There has long been a need to develop a specialised cystic fibrosis facility in the region, the Taoiseach pointed out.
Charlie Meehan, general manager of Mayo University Hospital, said the new facility will enable the first class cystic fibrosis team at the hospital to continue to deliver high quality care in state of the art clinical facilities.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive systems.
Ireland is reckoned to have the highest incidence and the highest carrier rate of CF in the world.
