Ambitious Louisburgh bid falls a little way short

THE Mayo seaside town of Louisburgh failed to meet its target of a 100% turnout in the General Election, writes Tom Shiel.

Returning officer Fintan Murphy estimated the turnout in the town at between 76% and 78%.

Close to 1,000 voters in the Louisburgh area were encouraged in a special way to come out and exercise their democratic right to vote.

Louisburgh Community Futures canvassed local people to vote in tribute to the volunteers of 1916 who, they said, paid a high price for the right to vote 100 years ago.
