Arrests made following housing estate 'terror' in Ballina

A NUMBER of families had to leave their homes after their houses and cars came under attack in a housing estate in Ballina early today (Friday).

Local gardaí made several arrests after what Supt. Joe Doherty described as 'serious criminal damage' was caused to a number of houses and vehicles at St. Patrick's Estate on the Crossmolina Road, about a mile from the town centre.

The incidents began around 10 a.m. last night (St. Patrick's Night) and continued until around 6 a.m. today. Gardaí had to be drafted in from outlying towns to help deal with the disturbances.

Supt. Doherty warned of determined garda action to deal with what he described as 'an ongoing feud situation.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated,” he warned.

A number of suspects arrested were later released. Files are to be prepared for the DPP.
