1916 Supplement Out This Week
The Connaught Telegraph is publishing a 20-page supplement in next Tuesday’s (April 19) issue to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
The publication focusses on Mayo patriots of the rebellion, including Dr. Kathleen Lynn, a native of Killala, and Major John MacBride, Westport, who was executed in May 1916 for his role in the conflict.
Historians Dr. Ann O’Mahony and Sinead McCoole write on the life and times of Dr. Lynn while Ballyhaunis-based author and historian Anthony J. Jordan profiles Major MacBride in a brfilliant contribution spanning four pages.
It also features other Mayo personalities of the era, most notably Dr. Bridget Thornton-Lyons, George Bell of Hollymount, Ballyheane’s Michael Higgins, Michael Staines of Newport, and members of the Westport Volunteers.
We also reveal the role of Mayo’s Colonel Maurice Moore in the revolt and reveal a connection between Sir Roger Casement and the town of Ballyhaunis.
There is an incisive analysis of how the events of 1916 shaped the future of Mayo while former Castlebar town councillor Noel Campbell, a local historian, gives his views on the impact the Rising and what it means to people today.
