Club pays warm tribute to Ben Garrett

POST mortem examinations will take place today (Monday) on the bodies of two men recovered in Galway Bay over the weekend.

Gardaí have confirmed the body of 21-year-old Castlebar man Ben Garrett, a Private in the Defence Forces based in Galway, was taken from the water yesterday morning at Galway Docks and transferred by the Rescue 118 helicopter to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.

Separately another man’s body was recovered from Galway Bay on Saturday morning during the search for missing Roscommon man Anthony Henehan.

In a tribute to Ben Garrett on its Facebook page, Castlebar Boxing Club, of which the deceased was a former member, posted: 'It’s been a very difficult few weeks. But during difficult times the character and hear beat that exists in our very close knit community is revealed.

'The strength and depth of the human spirit reveals itself in the people and community that grieves the loss of one of their own. Ben will always be part of the heartbeat that exists in our world.

'Ben will always be loved, not only for his athletic ability but for his good nature, humour and cheeky smile. We take strength from our memories and we thank Anne and Martin Garrett for sharing their son Ben with us.

'It has been an honour and privilege to have been part of Ben’s world, our lives were transformed for the better the day Ben walked into our world. Our thoughts are with the Garrett family in this difficult time.'
