Big shock as Hollymount Carramore stun Ballintubber

LAST year’s intermediate champions caused the shock of the Mayo senior football championship when they defeated the champions of 2014 by a point - 3-3 to 0-11.

It was no less than the south Mayo men deserved as they smothered the Ballintubber attack with a blanket defence, Cillian O’Connor scoring 0-6 of his side's tally in a game which saw Alan Dillon introduced in the second half as Ballintubber trailed by 0-5 to 1-3 at the break, a superb goal from Kevin Costello putting Hollymount-Carramore in the driving seat.

But the killer goals from Hollymount-Carramore came in the second half from Conor Keane and full-back Darren McHugh and a six-point lead was to prove a bridge too far for Ballintubber, although they did have a chance to share the points but Padraig O’Connor’s injury-time effort drifted just wide of the post.

County champions Castlebar Mitchels had no difficult in getting their championship defence up and running, Danny Kirby nailing a hat-trick against Crossmolina as they ran out comfortable 3-13 to 0-9 winners in game watched by Mayo manager, Stephen Rochford.

Breaffy also overcome Garrymore (1-9 to 0-6), while Ballaghaderreen saw off Ballyhaunis and Davitts had a good away win over Claremorris.

In the only other senior games played on Saturday evening, Aghamore had plenty in hand over Charlestown while Kiltane and Knockmore drew.
