Vaughan sees red as Ballina Stephenites run riot
MAYO ace Donal Vaughan was sent off on a straight red card and it proved to be the game changer between Ballina Stephenites and Ballinrobe at Flanagan Park in the only county senior championship match played today.
The win puts Ballina ahead of Castlebar on score difference to take control of group 3.
Ballina led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time but ended up winning by 4-12 to 1-6, three of those goals coming during a hectic last few minutes.
Ciaran Treacy scored the first of his two goals just a minute after Vaughan was sent off following an altercation with Sean Regan.
Treacy added a second while substitue Kevin Newell and Stephen Mullins also found the Ballinrobe net, the home side's goal coming from the penalty spot from the boot of Derek McDonnell.
In the intermedaite championship, Westport had a good away win over last year’s junior champions and All-Ireland finalists Ardnaree, winning by 0-15 to 2-7.
However, the west Mayo side, which led by 0-10 to 1-1 at the interval, had to withstand a stern Ardnaree second half challenge despite the fact Ardnaree played the second 30 minutes with 14 players after midfielder Stephen Tighe was given a straight red just before the break.
Kiltimagh were far too strong for Swinford while Shrule-Glencorrib defeated Castlebar B.
