Almost as good as the real thing: Pearl Jem.

All set for a great night of old school grunge music

IN what promises to be a great night of old school grunge music in Castlebar tomorrow night (Friday, May 20), Ireland's greatest Pearl Jam tribute act, Pearl Jem, come to play Garbo's.

It has been almost 25 years since the release of Pearl Jam's debut long player, Ten – one of the greatest grunge albums of all time. Since releasing Ten, Pearl Jam have gone on to sell almost 100 million albums worldwide and secured a place in the hearts and minds of people globally.

Their music has shaped and inspired a whole generation, and this is something that Irish-based Pearl Jem have not taken for granted as they paid great attention to detail when preparing this show.

Formed after the demise of Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with Ten. One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, over the course of the band's career the members became noted for their refusal to adhere to traditional music industry practices, including refusing to make proper music videos or give interviews, and engaging in a much-publicised boycott of Ticketmaster.

In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as 'having spent much of the nineties deliberately tearing apart their own fame', yet 25 years later the band are just as popular as ever.

As a means of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of Ten, throughout 2016 Pearl Jem will be presenting a performance of the great album in its entirety from start to finish across a series of concerts in Ireland and beyond. To complement this, a selection of tracks taken from every album in the Pearl Jam back catalogue right up to their most recent offering, Lightning Bolt, will also be included as part of the performance.

Formed in 2006, Pearl Jem have gone from strength to strength, enjoying much success touring across Ireland, UK and Europe. Gaining the hard-earned respect of even the most hardcore fans of the real thing, this highly acclaimed tribute are now widely regarded as one of Europe's best.

Whether it's the more melodic, chilled-out aspect of this two-hour programme or the full-on guitar-driven songs you love, these lads have it covered. It promises to be a great night of grunge nostalgia.

Support on the night comes from Still Alive, a local grunge band who will be performing tracks from various other grunge acts, including Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, amongst others.

This promises to be a great night of grunge nostalgia for the county town. Tickets are on sale now and are available through Downtown Records and Hogs Heaven. For further information, visit finbarhobanpresents.com.
