Parent in traffic deathtrap appeal

A PARENT has launched a campaign to remove a traffic deathtrap at Milehill, Ballinrobe.

Derek O’Neill took to social media to appeal to Mayo County Council to address the problem.

He explained: “I was driving to town with two of my children when a car came over the hill (pictured) at around 80 miles an hour and swerved to avoid us. This is the third close call I’ve had myself but this was the first time I had two of the kids with me.

“I have asked the council to take away the grass on the right-hand side and it would be a thousand times safer to drive up to the top of the hill as you could see over the hill and also see a lot more behind you.

“There are families with young children and six farmers using this road. It’s only a matter of time before someone is hurt if a car comes over this hill at speed and hits a tractor.

“A lot of people called to my door asking for votes during the general election campaign. I pointed out the issue to them but nothing has bene done. To be fair, local Councillor Damian Ryan did his best when I approached him but he was given a big no for his troubles.

“What I’m asking for is only a few hours’ work, which the council won’t let me do. It will save lives. It’s common sense and it would cost the council very little.”
