Work set to start on primary care centres

AN investment of €70 million is being made in 14 primary care centres across Ireland, including three centres for Mayo - Westport, Claremorris and Ballinrobe.

Start-up activities are expected on all sites from Monday next, May 30, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, has confirmed.

The centres will provide a range of integrated primary care services, including GP practices, community mental health services, public health nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech and language therapy, chiropody, dietitian and primary care counselling.

Explained Minister Ring: “The total staff complement for the Westport Primary Care Centre will be in the region of 20 staff. One local GP practice has already signed a lease agreement to locate their practice in this centre.

“Once up and running, the Westport Primary Care Centre will be a valuable asset for the people of Westport and the surrounding areas and I welcome the further progress on this matter.”

Also welcoming the announcement, Taoiseach Enda Kenny commented: “The centres will be a real boost for Mayo, with local people able to access a wide range of services.

“It is envisaged that they will be open at least five days a week, with extra hours at weekends and evenings for some services.”
