Death of widely known priest Canon Attie Devine
THE death has taken place of Canon Attie Devine (Arthur), Rathbawn Road, Castlebar, and formerly of Newport.
One of the most senior members of the clergy in the Tuam Archdiocese, news of his passing at Abbeybreaffy Nursing Home came as a shock to all those who knew him.
He served in the Castlebar parish from 1969 to 1979 and later in Glenisland from 1999 to 2003 before his retirement in 2003, after which he resided in the county town.
The late Arthur Devine was born on October 13, 1927, in Newport. He was ordained on June 21, 1953.
He served on the following missions during his career.
Chaplain, Errew Monastery 1953–1954; Diocese of Clonfert 1954–1957; S.C., Inis Oirr, Árainn 1957–1960; C.C., Milltown 1960–1962; C.C., Glenamaddy 1962–1964; C.C., Letterfrack 1964-1969; C.C., Castlebar 1969–1979; C.C., Taugheen 1979–1987; P.P., Menlough 1987–1999; A.P., Glenisland 1999–2003; Retired, Castlebar 2003–2016.
Fr. Attie will be sadly missed by Archbishop Micheal Neary, all the priests of the Archdiocese and his family and wide circle of friends.
A tribute posted on the Tuam Archdiocese website stated: 'He served diligently for many years in the archdiocese and celebrated his diamond jubilee in 2013. He had a great sense of humour and was an avid hunter and angler.'
His remains will be reposing at Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, this evening (Thursday) from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary.
Burial takes place in Burrishoole Cemetery on Friday after Requiem Mass at 3 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
