Happy campers celebrate with hurlers before hitting to Euros
THERE was double celebration in Castlebar on Sunday as two winning teams toasted their success, writes Tom Gillespie.
Members of the Mayo hurling squad who won the Nicky Rickard Cup by defeating Armagh in Croke Park on Saturday joined the gang from the Bungalow Bar on Main Street as they showed off their €35,000 campervan, which they won in a competition in The Irish Star.
The group of six are busy stocking up the vehicle for their trip to the Euro 2016 games in France later this week.
Two of the winners, Alan ‘Cooks’ Culkeen and Joe Costello, travelled to Dublin at the weekend to collect the camper van which was put on display outside the Bungalow where Alan is head barman.
Customers and shoppers admired the camper van as they queued to get a glimpse of the inside of the vehicle.
The winning group also consists of pals Justin Cox, Frank Burke, Dan Ryan and Rory Delahunty.
Rory, who emigrated to Australia, will fly into Paris on Saturday to join the happy campers.
Alan said: “We're overwhelmed by the level of good wishes we have received since returning from Dublin with the campervan.
“It has become something of a novelty in the town and everyone wants to have a look inside it.”
The group set off by ferry on Saturday for France for the Euro games.
Alan added: “We were delighted that the hurlers joined in the celebrations. It was a memorable week for Mayo.”
