Armed garda response unit called to scene of crashed cash truck
A BRINK'S-Mat cash-in-transit truck was badly damaged today when it was involved in a collision with a car in the village of Ballyvary.
Two male security personnel had to be cut from their reinforced vehicle following the impact which occurred on the N5 around 10 a.m.
The security guards were brought by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar. They were released later as their condition was not serious.
The driver of the car involved was also treated in hospital.
Armed members of the garda response unit rushed to the scene and later escorted the security van, which was loaded with cash destined for banks
in the west Mayo area, to Castlebar garda station.
A unit of Castlebar fire brigade attended at the scene and helped cut the injured security personal form their badly damaged vehicle.
A garda investigation has begun into the circumstances of the accident which blocked the N5 Dublin to Westport road for a short period.
