Two-goal Prendergast fires Mayo to Ted Webb Cup victory
DYLAN Prendergast, with a goal in each half, was the Mayo hero as the combination from Mayo South-West edged out holders Galway City-West by 2-9 to 1-11 in the final of the Ted Webb (Under 16) Cup at the Centre of Excellence in Bekan last Friday.
Mayo held a slender 1-7 to 1-5 interval lead, the goal coming from Prendergast after just five minutes.
John Gallagher and Oisin Mullin were also on target for the Mayo lads, who kicked 1-4 to 0-2 clear after 20 minutes.
But Galway were very much back in it seven minutes before half-time when Cian Monaghan found the Mayo net and they finished with points from Matthew Tierney, Evan Kenny and Brian Harlowe to leave just two between the sides at the break.
Once again Mayo struck for an early goal in the second half, Prendergast’s centre finding its way to the net, but it was a goal the Galway defence will be furious themselves to have conceded, coming as it did less than a minute after the restart.
Aaron McDonnell added a point on the 35th minute as Mayo took a commanding 2-8 to 1-5 lead but the home team managed just one further point for the remainder of the game as Galway fought back to within three points and looked poised to overhaul their opponents 15 minutes from time.
However, Mayo’s James Jennings was to score a crucial point as it pushed Mayo four clear again, Galway managing to close it to a singe point before time denied them in the end of at least a draw, but full credit to Mayo who defended so well in that second half.
