VIDEO: Big turnout for opening of new Mayo school
A NEW primary school has opened in Castlebar for the first time since 1983.
Educate Together opened the doors to their classes, off Hopkins Road in the town, this morning.
There was a big turnout of well-wishers, including the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Al McDonnell, Deputy Lisa Chambers, Councillor Martin McLoughlin and Councillor Cyril Burke as well as the head of the Castlebar Municipal District, John Condon, and Austin Vaughan, county librarian.
Paul Rowe, chief executive officer of Educate Together, and Jarlath Munnelly, regional manager, were also in attendance along with the parents of the 12 children who have enrolled for the first year.
Sarah Calvey, school principal, paid tribute to everybody who helped them bring their dream of a new school to fruition following a number of setbacks.
