Castlebar Golf Club within reach of first senior green pennant
CASTLEBAR Golf Club is within reach of winning its first senior Golfing Union of Ireland green pennant.
The club's Pierce Purcell team has reached the national final of the competition at Carton House, Maynooth, after defeating Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, in today's penultimate round by 3-2.
The victory was secured by the pairing of Stephen Munnelly and Tomas Ruane on the 19th hole of their encounter, the former slotting a 44-foot putt to seal his team's passage into the decider against Nenagh Golf Club tomorrow morning (first match at 10.30 a.m.)
Castlebar's two other winning pairings were Val Jennings and Mikey McHugh and David Molloy and Paul Fitzgerald.
The team is led by Rory Courell (captain) and Colm Dawson (vice-captain).
They are wished every success in tomorrow's final.
