One Day, One Night, One Community, One Fight
RELAY For Life Castlebar wants to fill Breaffy Sports Arena for its opening ceremony on Saturday next, September 24, at 6 p.m.
As with last year, Relay For Life will kick off with a very special Survivors’ Lap of Honour. A survivor is anyone who has or has had cancer, and survivors inspire and give us hope in fighting back and eliminating cancer.
The survivors’ lap is an inspirational start to the event where survivors of all ages are invited to begin the relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends and teams from the community who have come together to celebrate their achievements. The teams and relay supporters will follow next.
Committee member Leanne Reilly is inviting all cancer survivors to get in touch and let them know that you’re coming.
“We will have the all-important purple t-shirt for survivors, who give hope to so many others.
“We’ll also have the survivor’s meal, a chance to chat and chill out in the VIP area of the arena,” she says.
Please contact Leanne on (087) 7682833 or send a message to them on their Facebook page to let them know you are coming.
The Candle of Hope ceremony will take place at 10 p.m. After dark, they will honour people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Candle of Hope ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags, each bearing the name of a person touched by cancer or a message, while participants walk a lap in silence.
As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease.
Candle of Hope bags can be bought before relay to write your message on and that will be displayed at relay for the 24 hours.
What can you do?
