New church planned for Mayo county town
A PLANNING application has been lodged with Mayo County Council for a new church in Castlebar town centre.
The trustees of Calvery Mission are seeking permission for a change of use of Anchor House, Humbert Mall, to accommodate a religious body for their community, social and recreational activities.
In the likely event of the green light being given by the council, the building will become a church for public workshop and religious instruction.
According to their own website, the Calvary Mission is a network of Christians working together to establish Bible-centred churches in the west of Ireland.
The mission is currently active in Mayo and Roscommon with the aim of establishing church-planting churches through evangelism, discipleship and leadership training.
Similar places of worship are already in place in the town, including at the Mall, Newport Road and in Rehins.
The growth of new churches is occurring at a time when the numbers attending traditional religious services across the country are in decline.
