Taste of success for Cafolla's

THE legendary in-house cut-and-hand-finished chips served at Cafolla’s of Castle Street, Castlebar, have received national recognition, writes Tom Gillespie.

Restaurants Ireland have selected the county town diner and takeaway as one of the top 100, and only Mayo premises, for their 2016 coveted awards.

The accolade is due to the great feedback from social media platforms and a visit from Restaurants Ireland and presented by www.restaurantsireland.ie. They achieved the award in recognition of their all-round well prepared meals and great service.

Richard Delahunty, who runs the business with his mother Breda, said: “My mother started the business over 11 years ago and I joined the team seven years ago. The takeaway has been open since 1981. It is now well established. We have revamped it but we try to keep everything the same. We have added a few new items to the menu.

Our chips are legendary. Customers come from Tuam and Westport to get them. There used to be five or six Cafolla outlets around the region and the public miss them.

So they come shopping to Castlebar. Then they buy their chips, which they used to eat in the car park before we opened the diner three years ago.

Before they leave they often come in again and order more chips for the children at home.

We are busy here in the diner during the day and the takeaway takes over at night.

“Our award was won on reviews on TripAdvisor and we are the only Mayo takeaway to be in the top 100.'
