Canadian houseboat washes up on north Mayo beach

A HOUSEBOAT has drifted across the Atlantic from Canada and washed up on a north Mayo beach, according to RTÉ News.

Malin Head Coast Guard was alerted to the vessel from a member of the public after it washed ashore on Cross Beach, Belmulet

The vessel was later secured by the crew of Ballyglass Coast Guard.

It is believed the houseboat was built by Rick Small, who previously fitted out a three-wheeled bike with solar panels, which powered him across 7,000km of Canada.

Written inside the vessel is a note which reads: 'I, Rick Small, donate this structure to a homeless youth to give them a better life that Newfoundlanders choose not to do! No rent, no mortgage, no hydro'.

Malin Coast Guard said it has been contact with colleagues in Halifax, who confirmed the boat had been docked over the summer.

There are reports the boat could have been docked in Portugal Cove-St Philip's in Newfoundland as late as September.

Mayo County Council is due to remove the vessel from the beach today.
