Bohola has got all it wants from Santa - a reduced speed limit

SANTA will have to drive his sleigh more slowly through the Mayo village of Bohola this Christmas.

The long awaited reduction in the local speed limit from 100 kmph to 60 kmph is at last a reality - just in time for the festive period.

As our photo shows, the finishing touches have been to the new signage and necessary accompanying infrastructure.

Members of the Bohola Traffic Calming Group have been campaigning for a speed restriction for years.

They argued strongly and articulately that life and limb was at risk in a 100 kmph arrangement.

Protest meetings were held and local placards were erected calling on the National Roads Authority (NRA) to impose a limit.

They even issued an ultimatum that they would hold a series of protest traffic stoppages on the busy N5 if their demands weren't met.

Thankfully, common sense prevailed and the protestors, who were backed in their stance by members of Mayo County Council, have had their demands granted.

The new traffic calming measures in Bohola are now in force.

Well done to action group chairman, James Golden, and his determined committee who wouldn't take 'No' for an answer.
